patternbook jido
patternbook jido considers garment patternmaking as a form of mapping at bodily scale. A 26-piece abstract skirt pattern is overlaid with the red longitudinal–latitudinal lines of a 1942 American military map of Seoul and an eighteenth-century diagram recording the hakikjin crane wing formation -- first adapted to naval combat during the Battle of Hansando to outmaneuver a larger Japanese imperial fleet. The overlay implicates the often inventive and arbitrary cartographies enlisted across imperial projects. Measures: 36 x 48 inches. Paper: Newsprint 50 g. Accompanied by patternbook
